To smelt down Black Metal Scrap you'll need a Blast Furnace which will need to be placed close by to an Artisan Table. Try to lure a few out at a time and gradually pick them off. The trap remains armed until an entity (passive creature, enemy or player) moves into the traps range, immediately above it. The Traps default state is unarmed, and can be armed immediately, by interacting with it. These enemies are extremely hostile and as you get closer to their villages you'll start being attacked, so it's important to make sure you're as prepared as possible in regards to armour and weapons. I did the Iron grind once with my original character, got so frustrated with having to mule the Iron around that I installed the Unrestricted Portals mod because I didn't want to do that kind of a mats grind ever again.
